Ridle Baku was an issue at Bayern Munich last summer. But the national player had already decided for VfL Wolfsburg.
Defender Ridle Baku (22) from Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg has revealed why he was not interested in FC Bayern Munich considering a transfer last summer.
“At that time I had already decided for VfL, so there was no thought about Bayern,” the international said in an interview with Sport1. In October the kicker reports that the German record champions dealt with a transfer of the 22-year-old in summer 2020.
Accordingly, the newly crowned club world champion had wanted to sign Baku at the time and then loan him to his ex-club Mainz 05 for another year. As is well known, nothing came of the transfer, in the end the German record champions brought right-back Bouna Sarr for eight million euros from Olympique Marseille for the right-back position.
VfL Wolfsburg: Baku wants to “develop internationally”
However, the interest of the reigning German champion played no role in his future decision. The 22-year-old all-rounder really flourishes in Wolfsburg, making his debut for the senior national team of national coach Joachim Löw, among others.
Also because things are going well in the Autostadt – the Wolves are fourth in the Bundesliga after 21 match days – he is visibly satisfied there. “In Mainz we often played against relegation, because I was able to gain experience. Now at VfL and can also develop internationally, I also made my debut in the senior national team,” Baku continued. Wolfsburg is “a very good point of contact for young players to take the next step and to be able to develop further here and maybe one day make the leap to a top club.”
His working paper in Wolfsburg dates back to the summer of 2025. There, Baku, who last played on the offensive wing, wants to develop further and then possibly take his next step at a top club. He played for the Wolves in all 21 Bundesliga games and has already scored four goals (two assists).
