A large part of the home residents in Lower Saxony has now been vaccinated against the corona virus. The residents and staff were the first in Lower Saxony to receive the vaccine.
The mobile teams have now vaccinated residents in 89 percent of the elderly homes in the country. This is reported by NDR 1 Lower Saxony. Nationwide about 170 homes were still missing on Friday. In a good half of all nursing homes in the country, the residents have already received the second injection – essential for protection against the coronavirus. In a comparison of the federal states, only North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria have already vaccinated more residents of nursing homes.

Five deaths – despite two vaccinations
However, a message from the district of Cloppenburg on Friday made people sit up and take notice: Five residents in a senior citizen center in Emstek died in connection with a corona infection – although they had already received a first and second vaccination against the virus. The exact cause of the deaths is unclear. A spokesman for the district pointed out that full protection against the virus would only develop two weeks after the second dose of vaccine. Infection is therefore still possible despite the vaccination.

Last place in the general vaccination rate
In terms of the general vaccination quota, Lower Saxony is far worse off in a national comparison: According to the Robert Koch Institute, only 2.4 percent of all Lower Saxony had their first injection by Wednesday. For comparison: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the front runner with 4.0 percent. This puts Lower Saxony at the bottom of Germany. But because so many home residents have now been vaccinated, there will soon be more appointments in the vaccination centers for people who are over 80 years old, according to Lower Saxony’s Health Minister Carola Reimann (SPD).
1.3 million more cans by the end of March
The centers have been instructed to increase their capacities. By the end of March, Lower Saxony should receive 1.3 million more vaccine doses. In purely mathematical terms, that would be enough for the entire first vaccination group, which, in addition to the over-80s and residents, also includes nurses, emergency services and hospital staff who treat corona patients.
