The new Italian government is sworn in
Xinhua News Agency, Rome, February 13 (Reporter Ye Xinke and Li Jie) The new Italian government with Mario Draghi as prime minister was sworn in at the Italian Presidential Palace on the 13th.
The new cabinet is composed of 23 ministers. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Interior, Minister of Defense and Minister of Health of the previous government remained in their original posts, and Daniele Franco, Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Italy, served as Minister of Economy and Finance.
It is understood that fighting the new crown epidemic and promoting the recovery of the Italian economy will be the primary task facing the new government. The previous government has formulated a draft national recovery plan in key areas such as digitalization, ecological transformation, medical care, infrastructure, education and scientific research, with a total investment of more than 300 billion euros, of which more than 200 billion euros will come from the European Union Recovery Fund. The new cabinet will continue to refine the plan and submit it to the European Commission for approval in April.
On January 13 this year, due to dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Conte’s performance in power, the Italian Vigor Party withdrew from the ruling coalition, and the ruling coalition lost its absolute majority in the Senate of Parliament. On January 26, Conte handed in his resignation to President Mattarella. On February 3, Mattarella authorized Draghi to form a new government. After consultations with various parties, Draghi was supported by major political parties. He announced on the evening of the 12th that he would accept Mattarella’s appointment as prime minister.
Draghi was born in September 1947. He was the President of the Central Bank of Italy and the President of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019.
