The Miami authorities announced this Friday a new assistance program for tenants who are behind with their rent and owners who have not been able to pay their mortgage, as well as in the payment of public services, due to the coronavirus crisis.

The plan, which seeks to alleviate the difficult economic situation that has thousands of city residents on the verge of being evicted from their homes, was approved by the Miami Commission.

“What was approved was to accept the 14 million dollars that the Department of the Treasury sent to the city of Miami through the CARES Act, to help people who are behind on their rent or on their mortgages, ”said Commissioner Manolo Reyes.

The aid would be for a maximum of 12 months or $ 24,000 ($ 2,000 a month), according to the rent that people pay, and which would not have to be returned by residents.

Reyes added that this money will be distributed directly to the owner of the house or the mortgage.

To receive aid, people must meet the following requirements:
- Living in Miami city limits

- Qualify for unemployment or experience financial hardship due to the pandemic

- Show they are at risk of being homeless
–
- Have a household income equal to or less than 80% of the area median income: For a household of 1 person, the income limit for an owner is $ 51,200 and for a household of 4 people the income limit is $ 73,100.

Priority will be given to households with a member who has been unemployed for more than 90 days and those with incomes below 50% of the area average.
On February 25, the Miami Commission will meet to discuss the start date of the program and how the process will be for those interested to apply.
