Mutations are a cause for concern
The extent to which the number of cases will continue to fall in the coming weeks depends primarily on how the new virus mutations spread in Germany. Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) said at a press conference on Friday that the winter was hard – and that everyone wanted to return to normal. Nevertheless, the infection rate is still too high and the newly appeared virus mutations too dangerous to allow further openings.

“If we open now, we will gamble away our previous success,” said Spahn. It is better to hold out for a while now than to risk the previous successes. It is a matter of continuing to protect the health system from overload.
