Without realizing it, the inhabitants of Cotentin will soon provide their aid in epidemiological monitoring. Soon it will be possible toestimate the presence of the covid-19 virus in the territory thanks to our wastewater.
In the coming days, the Agglomeration of Cotentin will sign an agreement with the network Obépine. Twice a week, samples from the Tourlaville wastewater treatment plant will be transmitted to the laboratory in order to assess the presence of the virus, and especially its quantity. The homes located in Cherbourg-Octeville, Tourlaville, part of Équeurdreville, La Glacerie, Digosville and Bretteville-en-Saire are therefore concerned.
80,000 households affected
This station, which gathers the wastewater from 80,000 subscribed households and treats on average 12 000 m3 per day, will therefore make its entry into this vast national pandemic monitoring network.
We have been contacted by the network several months ago now. We quickly showed our interest in this process, because it is always interesting to be able to take part in these preventive actions.
Cotentin counts 52 wastewater treatment plants, of which only five have a capacity of over 10,000 equivalent inhabitants: in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (two sites), Barneville, Valognes and Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue.
