The university answers questions on the new degree course approved by a resolution of the Regional Council in collaboration with theMagna Graecia University of Catanzaro
ARCAVACATA (CS) – The University of Calabria draws up a series of Questions and answers on the new degree course in Medicine and digital digital technologies, approved by a resolution of the Regional Council, in collaboration with theMagna Graecia University of Catanzaro.
What will be the duration of the new degree course in Medicine and Digital Technologies proposed by Unical and the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro?
The course will last 6 years, like all the degree courses of the Medicine and Surgery class.
At the end of the course, what qualifications does the graduate achieve?
The student obtains a double degree: the master’s degree in Medicine and Surgery and the three-year degree in Computer Engineering, bioinformatics curriculum.
How is it possible to achieve two degrees with a single course?
An integral part of the study plan in Medicine and Digital Technologies are the 180 credits required to achieve the three-year degree in Bioinformatics Engineering, in addition to the degree in Medicine. A significant part of these credits is already common to the courses of Medicine and Surgery and Computer Engineering, on the basis of ministerial regulations, with the exception of 5 courses – for a total of 27 training credits – which are provided as additional to the traditional medical curriculum. Overall, therefore, the study plan includes 387 credits.
What differentiates the new degree course from the traditional one in ‘Medicine and Surgery’?
The acquisition, in addition to the typical skills of a doctor’s training, also of the knowledge useful to master new technologies and apply them in the health sector and the learning of methods and techniques of artificial intelligence and bio-informatics, necessary to design and develop new applications for the fields of precision medicine, telemedicine, personalized medicine, robotic surgery.
Thanks to these additional skills, certified by the achievement of the double degree, graduates in Medicine and Digital Technologies will therefore be professionals trained to face present and future challenges in the health field, capable of managing innovation and contributing to innovation itself.
Ultimately, what do those who enroll in the new degree program study?
The student will acquire all the necessary knowledge to start the career of the doctor (Human Anatomy, General and Clinical Pathology, Pharmacology, Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, the clinical disciplines of the medical and surgical area, etc), but will also follow courses in Bioinformatics, Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Biomechanics and so on.
Where will the lessons be held?
For the first three years at the University of Calabria, where the student will acquire basic medical preparation, combined with engineering and bioinformatics skills. In the second three-year period the courses will be held at the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro and will be mainly dedicated to clinical training.
In which structures will the student be able to carry out the internship?
In the departments of the hospitals already affiliated with the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro and in others that will be affiliated in the coming months. Internships are also planned in computer laboratories and research centers.
What are the professional opportunities envisaged?
At the end of the six years, the graduate in Medicine and Digital Technologies will be able to access the state exam for qualification to the profession of surgeon and the competitions for medical specialization schools. He will be able to work in all hospitals, health facilities, professional offices. The skills acquired will also allow him to work in state-of-the-art healthcare facilities in the use of new technologies, in robotic surgery departments, in advanced diagnostic centers or specialized in precision medicine, in the field of telemedicine.
Graduates may also choose to devote themselves to research or work in the pharmaceutical and industrial sectors for the development of innovative technological solutions in the healthcare field.
How many places are there?
In the initial activation phase, 60 places are foreseen.
How can I access the course?
To obtain enrollment in the course, it is necessary to take and pass the admission test to Medicine and Surgery.
