Hermosillo.- Alejandro Zepeda Méndez, 61, died of a heart attack on January 23 after suffering from COVID-19 in December 2020. Since he no longer had a viral load, the relatives decided to donate some of his organs.

According to information from the State Transplant Center of the State of Sonora, it is the first case nationwide post COVID.

Alonso Zepeda Villareal, Alejandro’s son, said that his father presented symptoms between December 10 and 12, where he tested positive for COVID-19. He improved in the following days and on the 20th of the same month his state of health became complicated.

“On the 25th we had to admit him, more or less we in the idea that it was already on the 12th or 13th of the disease where he already had a severe picture of pneumonia, we admitted him to the hospital, he had a need for oxygen He had suffered a seizure on the 25th in the morning, around 4 in the morning, where his oxygenation had completely dropped, it was at levels of 72 ”, he said.

The first four days in the hospital, he was in the emergency room and between December 30 and January 1, he was transferred to the floor for presenting improvement in his health, but he still required medical oxygen.

The virus already had a lower viral load in his body, but it left sequelae of pneumonia in one of his father’s lungs, he said.

He mentioned that on January 12 he was discharged, but he still had to use medicinal oxygen at home, in addition to being negative for COVID in a second test. On the morning of the 23rd of the same month, Alejandro Zepeda Méndez died at his home due to a heart attack.

His son commented that the director of the State Transplant Center, Ernesto Duarte Tagles, was contacted to invite him to donate his father’s organs, so Alonso informed his mother of this, who told him that on occasion her husband commented that you were interested in being a donor.

So Alonso went home to look for his father’s driver’s license and verified that he was a donor, therefore, the family agreed to the donation.

“At the moment the doctor told me that it was going to be corneas, tissue, even bones and that other types of organs could not be donated due to the cause of death, which was a heart attack,” he said.

There are 90 people who received don Alejandro’s organs, an action that motivated his wife and children to also be organ donors.
