“It’s a very delicate situation. André Quemin, the mayor of Bonnefamille, does not wish to say more. The operation that took place in his village on Wednesday, February 10, caused a stir. As part of a procedure led by the prosecutor’s office in Vienne, the veterinary services of Isère and the Oeuvre d’Assistance aux Bêtes d’Attoirs (OABA) * intervened on a farm in the municipality to remove about fifty of cattle: “They are very thin,” notes Frédéric Freund, director of the OABA, present on the spot. We used a bucket of food to get them out and they rushed over, they’re very hungry. They are parasitized, they obviously do not receive veterinary care. The cattle were taken to an OABA partner farm in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.
The farm belongs to farmers who, according to our information, would no longer be able to take care of their animals, but the withdrawal was made under “very complicated” conditions: “At the start, one of the farmers helped us then it got tense, ”explains Frédéric Freund.

An open investigation
The alert on these animals was given by residents of the area who sent photos of the emaciated cattle to the OABA. “I immediately contacted the veterinary services of Isère,” says the director of the association. The owners were already followed by a particular device of the chamber of agriculture. When new pictures of cattle, in agony this time, were sent, a check was immediately carried out.
“Proceedings have been opened for ill-treatment and acts of cruelty to animals,” confirms the Vienna prosecutor’s office. It is within the framework of this procedure that the withdrawal operation was carried out. “The investigation is just starting, it is too early to say if there will be prosecution. “
According to the Oeuvre d’Assistance aux Bêtes Abattoirs, reports have been more and more frequent for several weeks: “The agricultural crisis which continues, the climate made the production of hay and straw more complicated and therefore increased. the prices. Suddenly, some farmers no longer have the means to obtain it. “
The Aid Work for Slaughterhouse Animals (OABA) is an association for the protection of farm animals created in 1961. It performs between 30 and 35 rescues per year.
