Malaysian Government: Police Acted Well In Investigation Ivana Smit | NOW

The police have acted according to the rules and conscientiously in the investigation into the death of the Dutch Ivana Smit (18), the Malaysian government reports. According to the authorities, there was no dereliction of duty.

Lawyer Sébas Diekstra confirms the position of the government after reporting from Malaysian media as FMT. He assists the relatives of Smit. The young woman was killed in a fall from an apartment complex in Kuala Lumpur in 2017.

The government is thus responding to a civil action by the family. The relatives want a new research leader to be appointed. They feel that the current one has made too many mistakes.

For example, it turned out during the handling of the case that the woman’s temperature was not recorded when she was found, which leaves the question whether she had already died before she fell. There was also no surgeon on site.

The Supreme Court in Malaysia reopened the investigation as a murder investigation in 2019.

There are now claims in the case. The police called Interpol last week to find out the whereabouts of the couple with whom Smit was staying at the time she died. A hearing for the family’s civil suit will follow in March.
