SM Caen played from the 1988/89 season for the first time in its club history in the top French league. The Normandy club was able to stay there for seven years.
Then Stade Malherbe developed into a real elevator team with six descents and five ascents. The last promotion to Ligue 1 succeeded in the 2013/14 season.
The Vikings stayed there for five years before the next move to Ligue 2 was due after the 2018/19 season. In the second division, Caen has so far placed itself in the gray midfield.
After a 13th place at the end of the previous season, SMC is currently 11th in the table. The club got off to a good start in the current season and was among the top 4 by matchday 12.
But to the Caen celebrated only one victory in the last 13 league matchdays, a 3-2 away at newly promoted US Dunkerque. Since this success, SM has been eight league games without a win.
Also at home there hasn’t been a threesome for seven games. With this series, coach Pascal Dupraz, who has been in charge of the club since October 2019, naturally comes under increasing pressure.
But so far the coach has received full support from President Olivier Pickeu. After financially very difficult times, the club is increasingly focusing on young players. This path takes a little more time than expected, said the President.
On Wednesday evening, Dupraz will have to do without players like Jonathan Rivierez, Jessy Deminguet, Yoel Armougom and Prince Oniangué as well as the first two keepers Rémy Riou and Garissone Innocent in the cup game against Paris. It is still unclear whether Kélian Nsona can play.
