The US CNBC also reported that the negotiations between Hyundai and Apple on the manufacture of self-driving electric vehicles were not completely broken. CNBC cited experts and explained that, as the Hyundai Motor Group mentioned in the disclosure that it was discussing with several companies, the negotiations were a temporary suspension and no one said it was over, and that the two sides could review the deal in the future.
As for the reason for the suspension of negotiations, the view is that it is because Apple’s secrecy strategy has been broken. Bloomberg News quoted a source that day, explaining that Apple, which kept the development project in strict secrecy for years, would have stopped negotiations due to Hyundai Motor’s January announcement and media reports. The news agency predicted that it was unclear whether the discussion would resume or, if so, when it would be.
Another reason for the suspension of the negotiations is that Hyundai Motor Company is negatively positioned to become a subcontractor of Apple. After the announcement on the day, Reuters reported that “there was a big backlash against becoming Apple’s OEM” inside Hyundai Motor Company, citing an official familiar with negotiations.
According to Reuters, Apple and Hyundai Motor Co. have been discussing cooperation since 2018, but it was difficult to reach a settlement because the two companies would not be able to cooperate in an equal position because Apple wants control of the Apple car’s hardware beyond its software.

The industry still believes that this year is the best time to enter the EV market for Apple, and that it is struggling to select an appropriate strategic partner among automakers. This is because after the election of US President Joe Biden, eco-friendly car drives have accelerated worldwide, and General Motors (GM) and Ford in the United States are eager to establish their own electric platform.
Earlier, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that it is more advantageous for IT company Apple to target the electric vehicle market through overseas partnerships rather than invest in building its own vehicles.
