Girl fights for her life after being dragged by stolen car in Kansas

A 13-year-old girl was dragged several miles by the family’s car that had been stolen outside a restaurant in Kansas, police said.

The young woman was in the back seat of the SUV when family members entered the restaurant to look for food on Saturday, and Kevin Palmer, 34, burst into the vehicle, seized the steering wheel and drove off, Wichita police said in a statement.

The young woman tried to get out of the moving vehicle but got caught with her seat belt and was dragged away, police said. Someone saw what happened, called 911, and followed the vehicle.

Palmer braked, got out of the car and ran away but was caught by police. The young woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is one of the saddest cases I have seen in my more than 28 years of law enforcement experience,” Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said in the statement.

The identity of the girl was not immediately revealed.

Palmer is charged with murder. It was not known if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
