The residents of the Dumbo district (short for: Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) are annoyed. It used to be rather quiet in the stylish quarter with cobblestone streets and converted warehouses.
But today hundreds of tourists besiege the residential area in New York’s Brooklyn district. The rush is so great that it is now dangerous: Day and night the Insta tourists run into the street and into the traffic, blocking house entrances, reluctantly or not at all.
And all because of a photo on Instagram: the Empire State Building, framed by a pillar of the Manhattan Bridge.

An Instagrammer uploaded it, which made tourists and influencers from all over the world want it too. And this photo can be taken from just a few streets in Brooklyn, including Washington Street.
The residents are demanding regulations
“I have two little daughters, and sometimes we can’t walk across the street because it feels like 500 weddings are being filmed here every morning,” Darren Appannah tells the TV station.Ny1“. It’s one of the most annoying things about the neighborhood, agrees Alex Mitow, who lives on Washington Street.

They are calling for regulations to be put in place. One proposed solution would be to make Washington Street pedestrian to improve safety. Not everyone is convinced of it. “That would certainly make it worse, then maybe thousands of people come every day,” fears Darren Appannah.
The Ministry of Transport has announced that it will consider redesigning the street to address residents’ concerns.
