Chennai: Joe Root stopped batting on the first day and reached the dressing room on the first day of the second half. As the Indian bowlers struggled to get rid of Root and his team-mates, the visitors’ batting quickly picked up a run.
With Dom Sibley falling in the last over of the first day, the English batting line-up jumped without giving the hosts a chance to return to the game. Ben Stokes, who came in fourth, scored 82 off 118 balls to give Root the lead. Oli Pope is on the field with 24 runs to support the eye-catching route of 209 runs. At last count, England were 469 for four. The only consolation for India was Nadeem’s defeat of Ben Stokes.
Root completed 150 runs on Saturday, equaling Virat Kohli’s record for most runs scored.
Root has done well in the last two Tests against Sri Lanka. He also scored a double century and a century. Root Amla, who made his Test debut in the 100th Test.
