5 Basic Supplements to Maintain Overall Health

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

For the sake of care health, not infrequently people get used to consuming supplement and vitamin. Several supplements are needed to maintain overall health.

“Supplements can help those who are deficient in vitamin intake due to diet and help us prevent nutritional deficiencies,” said nutritionist Clarissa Lenherr, quoting Bustle.

In some cases, supplements can also help reduce symptoms of disease severity or speed up the recovery process.

So, what supplements are needed at this time?

Head of the Nutrition Section at the Advanced Nutrition Program, Lorraine Perreta said, for starters you should combine five types of supplements such as probiotics, vitamin C, vitamin D, omega-3, and omega-6.

1. Probiotics

Probiotics are good bacteria needed to maintain health, especially digestion. Probiotic intake, said Perretta, is an important step in initiating overall health.

“A healthy intestine indicates that the body is able to absorb nutrients from food and other supplements that are consumed,” explained Perretta.

Quoting from Healthline, probiotics can be obtained from consumption of tempeh, yogurt, kimchi, pickles or kombucha. But you can also support your probiotic needs through taking supplements.

2. Vitamin C

When it comes to endurance, it’s impossible not to include vitamin C on the list. It is quite difficult to meet your vitamin C needs from food alone. As a result, one of the best ways is to add a daily vitamin C supplement.

Vitamin C will be very useful when you are stressed. Why? When stressed, the body uses a lot of vitamin C to respond to stress in the adrenal glands. It’s no wonder that many people experience symptoms of vitamin C deficiency such as fever when under stress.

3. Omega 3 and 6

Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are essential for optimizing mental and physical health. Quoting from the Harvard Health Publishing page, omega 3 fatty acids can be obtained from fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, mackerel, sardines or nuts and seeds such as flaxseed, walnuts, and chia seeds.

Meanwhile, omega 6 fatty acids are obtained from sunflower oil, soybean oil, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds.

“Research has shown they both support skin health, memory abilities, and cardiovascular health,” says Perretta.

Unfortunately, many people are unable to meet their daily needs for omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

4. Vitamin D

Living in a tropical country endows us with sun exposure. However, that was not enough. You need to increase your vitamin D intake apart from sun exposure.

Recent studies have found that vitamin D deficiency can affect the severity of symptoms of Covid-19 infection.
