Maksimishin was in charge of the intensive care unit at the hospital in the Siberian city of Omsk. Initial reports of the doctor’s sudden death reveal that his blood pressure suddenly skyrocketed, after which a heart attack turned fatal. For colleague Maria Morozova, Maksimishin’s death comes like a bolt from the blue. She had spoken to him this week in apparently good health.
Sergei Maksimishin is said to have managed the treatment of Navalny in the right direction. The opposition leader subsequently accused President Vladimir Putin of poisoning him.
Galina Narazova, spokeswoman for the Omsk Ministry of Health, states that – besides the already known information – no special cause is known for the unexpected death of Maksimishin. “When he arrived here his blood pressure was over 250. He managed to get it down, but his heart couldn’t take it anymore,” she says.
Deliberately killed
A close associate of Navalny, Leonid Volkov, does not rule out the fact that the doctor was deliberately killed. But Russian health care is very poor and it is not uncommon for doctors his age to die suddenly. I therefore think that no investigation will be conducted into his death. “
Navalny was flown from Omsk to Berlin, where he received further treatment. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for violating parole agreements while he was in Germany.
In a new episode of the podcast ‘The land of Wierd Duk’ the misconceptions surrounding the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny are discussed:
