Donald Trump extends US entry ban for Europeans

A ban extended until further notice

  • How far this date of March 13, 2020 seems … Remember: the US President then decided to close the US borders to travelers who had stayed in Europe during the 14 days preceding their departure for the United States. A ban pronounced for 30 days which should therefore have ended during the Easter weekend.
  • With the progression of the coronavirus epidemic, this reopening of the American borders was extended to the British on March 16, 2020. And the prospect of a rapid reopening has receded day after day since. On April 13, 2020, during a press conference at the White House, Donald Trump settled the issue in one sentence: “We will maintain the ban as it is until these countries are healed,” said he declared.

When will we return to normal?

  • No date has now been put forward for the reopening of the American borders. First of all, it will depend on the evolution of the pandemic in Europe. On April 13, 2020, French President Emmanuel Macron set May 11, 2020 as the date for the start of deconfinement in France. Provided that the health situation improves by then. For festivals and major events, no return to normal is expected by mid-July. For restaurants, hotels, bars, cinemas, theaters and museums, the recovery will be gradual but no precise date has been indicated. We can therefore expect that the US ban will continue beyond May 11, 2020 and be modeled on the curve of the evolution of cases in Europe.
  • Moreover, Europe has also closed its borders to non-European travelers “until further notice”, as Emmanuel Macron recalled during his televised speech. During a video conference with the social partners on April 10, 2020, the French President estimated that the closure of European borders could last until September.
  • Everything will also depend on the evolution of the epidemic in the USA, which has become the country most affected by the coronavirus since March 26, 2020. On April 14, 2020, the number of cases is approaching the 600,000 mark, including nearly 200 000 cases in New York State. See my article on the coronavirus in New York and the situation in the USA.

What if you had to leave this summer?

  • Given the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic, it is very difficult to predict the outcome of the crisis. But given the current evidence, it is reasonable to assume that no trip to the United States will be possible this summer. No certainty, however, as events are linked …
