Thick, white flakes that float down as light as a feather on the darkness of this world and simply cover everything quietly. These snowflakes turned the whole of Bremen into a winter wonderland for just under a week. There was a dingy dew on Wednesday yesterday, but according to the weather forecast, the chances are good that there could be another weekend in pure white. According to the German Weather Service (DWD) forecast, it will snow the heaviest in Lower Saxony and Bremen. Between Bremen and the Lüneburg Heath and south of Bremen, 20 to 30 centimeters of snow could fall on Sunday, said meteorologist Franka Nawrath on Thursday in Hamburg. Snow drifts are possible in stormy winds.
That’s it, one more time that St. Moritz feeling with a bright blue sky in a white powdered landscape and that in the North German Plain. The children in particular hope for this, as they sled to their hearts’ content wherever they could.

Snow and ice are not just traffic obstacles. Especially not when a lot of people are working and studying at home these days. The white splendor outside seems to wipe away all the Corona sadness for a short time. And suddenly it was there: a breath of infinite lightness of being. For the first time in a long time, carefree, laughing people cavorted outside, simply enjoying the winter weather. Under heavily laden branches, the little ones took a shower in the falling snow, cheering. Some couldn’t get enough, so on Saturday night hikes were undertaken in the Bürgerpark, only to marvel at the fading moon and the following sunrise in the mist on the Weser on early Sunday morning. As if it were a painting by William Turner, arguably the most important painter of British Romanticism, who once revolutionized art.
The people of Bremen were inspired by the snow. One of the most popular challenges of the past few days: Who builds the most beautiful snowman or should it be a snow cat or even a snow snail? And when was the last time there was a snowball battle? Not for years. It goes without saying that this had to be made up for in all of Bremen’s districts.
Snow princess on the wall
With a little luck, the strollers could even discover a real Cinderella on the Theaterberg in the Wall-Anlagen. In the middle of the snow, the snow princess posed for a bridal wear and evening dress shop on the Kulturmeile in an embroidered ball gown made of cream-colored tulle. Lea Mechels defied the freezing cold with a beaming smile. The young woman from Bremen with her tiara in her hair looked as if she had come from far away times long past. The only thing missing was the glass slipper and the carriage.
With a little imagination, the people of Bremen, who are sorely lacking in cultural life at the moment, were able to travel back to the time when the large Bremen City Theater was built here on the Theaterberg in 1843. A breath of music and the clink of champagne glasses waft by. Gone, in 1944 it burned to the ground in a bombing raid. Today Gerhard Marcks’ Aegina slumbers right behind the big gate. This sculpture was also wrapped in a coat of snow. Who knows, maybe again this weekend.
