MEXICO – Agents of the Ministerial Police and Investigators of the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Tamaulipas rescued 49 Central American migrants on Wednesday in a neighborhood of the city of Reynosa, in the state of Tamaulipas.
In a statement, the entity’s Prosecutor’s Office reported that the police agents were alerted by a neighbor about the shouts of people asking for help in a field set up as a camp.
People from El Salvador were located on the property, including 4 women and 10 men; Guatemala (5), Honduras (3 women and 19 men) in addition to eight young people from Mexico.
According to the agency, with the exception of the latter, the migrants requested help from the authorities to return to their places of origin.
The Prosecutor’s Office pointed out that after interviewing the migrants, they reported “that their intention was to cross into the United States,” however, the people (human smuggler) with whom they had made the deal to transfer them “demanded a higher payment.”
The vehicle was stopped on a highway in Veracruz.
So when they refused to pay they were told “that they would be handed over to another group”, so they asked for help.
After the physical and health checks, the agents handed over the migrants to the National Migration Institute, a body that will be in charge of corroborating their legal status in the country
The state of Tamulipas, on the border with the United States, is a mandatory step for migrants who enter Mexico with the intention of reaching the northern border.
On January 23, the authorities found two charred trucks, one of them with 19 bodies inside, in the town of Santa Anita, in the municipality of Camargo, on the border with Texas, and the Mexican state of Nuevo León.
This Wednesday, the governor of Tamaulipas, Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca, promised that “there will be no impunity” in the case of the 19 murdered and burned people, the majority allegedly migrants, and assured that he is in contact with the government of Guatemala for the identification of victims.
