90% of those over 75 in the UK have already received the first dose of the vaccine

London. More than 10 million people have already received the first dose of a coronavirus vaccine in the United Kingdom, which is committed to mass vaccination to get out of the health crisis, according to official figures.

According to data from the Health Ministry, 10 million 21,471 first doses have been administered since the start of the campaign on December 8 in the United Kingdom, the first Western country to initiate this process.

The number of people who have received the required two doses amounts to 498,962.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed the news and pointed out at a press conference that almost 90% of those over 75 have received a dose in England, as well as all people in nursing homes.

Each injection “makes us a little safer,” Health Minister Matt Hancock said on Twitter, congratulating himself on these first 10 million vaccinated, “a very important step in the national effort against this virus.”

The UK has been fully confined again since the beginning of January to cope with a third wave of Covid-19 attributed to a much more contagious variant.

Country worst hit in Europe by the pandemic, the United Kingdom has more than 109,000 people dead.
