Real Madrid – La Liga Non-EU, not wanted by Spurs, big contract
Just five months after Real Madrid thought they had solved their Gareth Bale problem, they are now worried about the even bigger problem he will pose on his return this summer.
The Welshmen’s loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur has not gone to plan and the north London club are not even considering trying to keep him beyond the end of this season.
So, in July, Bale will return to Real Madrid, now as a non-EU player, with a year still to run on a very lucrative contract.
The indications are that Bale has no intention of settling for anything less than the totality of what is due to him in the event of an early termination of his deal with The whites.
The cost of that contract for Real Madrid is 34 million euros per year, which is a high price for a player who they may not have space for in the squad, especially as he would now have to occupy a precious non-EU spot.
The effect of Brexit on football is that Bale would be competing for a place with Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes, Eder Militao, Reinier Jesus and Takefusa Kubo, bearing in mind that only three non-EU players can be registered in the 25-man squad.
Real Madrid know that negotiations to pay Bale off will be tough to say the least, given the precedent set by the fact that he was the only player to reject a 10 percent pay cut during the pandemic.
The challenge will surely be to therefore find a new escape route for the Welsh international, with the door at Spurs likely to be closed behind him when he leaves.
The Bale problem continues to haunt Real Madrid and is a long way from being resolved.
