While schools and daycare centers in Germany and Europe are being closed and public life largely comes to a standstill due to the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, the United States is also preparing for more cases.

Hamm / New York – Among other things, there has been an entry ban for Europeans since Thursday. Just before the came into force, the native Hammer Jan Homeyer landed at the airport in New York. It is uncertain whether he and his girlfriend Kathi will be able to fly back next Thursday as planned.

“We live in Munich and have already been informed that flights will of course be canceled, but that there should be an emergency flight plan,” says the 32-year-old who works for RTL II in Munich. “We don’t know anything about that yet.”

The young couple flew to the “Big Apple” for a vacation and are now experiencing how the USA is preparing for the corona pandemic. “Many museums and viewing platforms are closing. Broadway plays are canceled, ”explains Homeyer. Unlike in Hamm, however, it would be difficult to bring such a large city to a standstill. “The subway is running, all shops are open and the city is still full of people. We were in Times Square yesterday, and there was always a lot going on, ”continued Homeyer. “But since the first public buildings are now closing, it could still rock up in the next few days.”

Better to wash your hands once more

The 32-year-old and his girlfriend are following the situation in Germany via the Internet and friends are keeping them up to date. “That feels strange, but we stay relaxed and prefer to wash our hands once too much,” says the native Hammer. Despite the coronavirus, sightseeing is on the program for the next few days: “We’ll do what we set out to do as far as possible and we are excited to see how it all develops.”

Homeyer does not believe that Americans will distance themselves when they know that the young couple is from Europe. “The openness and friendliness of the people here is a big part of why I’m such a big fan of this city,” explains Homeyer. “You just get into conversation with everyone and get to know people very quickly. No virus in the world will change that, I think. “
