Mexican agents arrested after US border massacre | Abroad

The arrested police officers are suspected of murder, abuse of power and making false statements. As far as is known, the victims were migrants from Guatemala. The Attorney General of Tamaulipas said it is still being investigated whether other agents and criminal organizations were also involved in the murders.

Many migrants in the area are trying to cross the border into the US illegally. Asylum seekers sometimes pay guides who in turn have to give money to gangs. Several criminal organizations are keen to control these lucrative smuggling routes.
