Cologne / Berlin (MH) – The outgoing director of the Cologne Opera, Birgit Meyer, has expressed incomprehension about her replacement. The change of artistic director before the opening of the renovated opera house “is, from my point of view, a very inopportune time”, Meyer told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” (Wednesday). She asked Lord Mayor Henriette Reker (non-party) what would speak against her bringing the interim to the alternative venue to an end. After all, she did “not do it so badly according to general opinion”.

Meyer’s contract, which runs until the end of the 2021/22 season, is not to be extended. The renovation of the opera will not be completed until 2024 at the earliest. “The very demanding situation of the interim is now made even more difficult for everyone involved in the opera without need,” complained the director.
In November Reker had spoken out in favor of a change in the Cologne opera management. She thinks it is crucial that the house “begins with a new handwriting” after returning to its headquarters, said the mayor.
Meyer has been the artistic director of the Cologne Opera since 2012. Since 2009 she has worked there as opera director and deputy artistic director. A new opera directorship is to be found with the help of an external selection committee and accompanied by a personnel consultancy.
