19 Bundesliga games have been played. FC Schalke 04 have just eight points, scored a meager 15 goals and already nine points behind relegation rank 16. The club’s sporting crisis couldn’t be more obvious. A few royal blue adjusting screws urgently need to be set in motion. However, the club seems paralyzed.
The role of sports director Jochen Schneider seems particularly problematic. The 50-year-old, who has been publicly criticized for weeks, is considered a failure even by the majority of the eleven-member supervisory board of FC Schalke 04. This is reported by “Sport Bild”.
Accordingly, this view should even exist regardless of whether S04 still masters the miracle of relegation or relegates to the 2nd Bundesliga.
According to the sports magazine, the fact that the supervisory board still does not pull the rip cord is due to some unfavorable circumstances. Five incumbents will be re-elected on June 13th. The term of office of further decision-makers ends and the result is a change. Decisions that have now been made could no longer be wanted after the restructuring. “That is why it is better not to decide anything,” the report concludes.
Particularly precarious: The Schneider personality has so far been completely bypassed at the regular conferences. Successor candidates should “only exist in the heads of individual supervisory boards”.
Gross remains “under no circumstances” as an S04 trainer
Schneider’s uncertain position also makes it difficult to find a much-needed successor for squad planner Michael Reschke, who had to resign at the end of November 2020. However, Schneider would have to hire a new sports director. That doesn’t make much sense as long as it’s not clear whether he’ll stay with the club at all.
This does not end the unfortunate chain of standstill, however. Because sports director Schneider is responsible for filling the coaching position. Christian Gross, as “Sport Bild” wants to know, will “under no circumstances” remain on the sidelines for the next season.
Talks with successors should not have been held due to the vacant sporting leadership. Only the name Domenico Tedesco is supposed to haunt the hallways, but this probably rules out a commitment in the second division.
Construction site squad: “XXL upheaval” at FC Schalke 04?
According to the report, the last, unsurprising construction site is the squad. A fact that Schneider and Co. by no means concealed recently. Specifically, “Sport Bild” names the extremely expensive salary structure and necessary “emergency sales” for the 2nd Bundesliga. The possibly necessary “XXL upheaval” has not yet been tackled due to the paralyzed management floor.
Relegation would probably only help. In return, they have at least readjusted properly in winter and signed four new, prominent players with Sead Kolasinac, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, William and Shkodran Mustafi.
That this is sufficient for an extreme turnaround has yet to be proven. S04 gets their first chance on Wednesday evening in the DFB Cup against VfL Wolfsburg (6:30 p.m.), on Sunday RB Leipzig is waiting in the league (3:30 p.m.).
