North Carolina, Raleigh-Wake Public Schools (WCPSS) students will return to classrooms for in-person instruction the week of February 15th.
WCPSS school board vote Today 8-1 for pre-K through third grade students and special education students in separate classrooms to return in two weeks for daily in-person classes.
Students in grades 4-12 will return in a rotation of classroom and online classes.
The traditional calendar students will return on February 16 and those of the continuous school year on the 15th.
Virtual classes
Most of the 161,650 Wake Public School students chose to stay with face-to-face classes this semester. The remaining 48% will take only online classes in the Virtual Academy program.
“We want to acknowledge the obvious,” Wake Public Schools Superintendent Cathy Moore told the board. “The conditions to return to face-to-face instruction are better than in January, when we met for the last time.”
On Tuesday, the state Senate Education Committee approved Bill S37 that would require all school districts to offer at least some in-person instruction.
The bill would require the option of daily in-person classes for special education students and at least some in-person classes for other students.
Governor urges to resume face-to-face classes
This afternoon North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper called on school systems in the state to resume face-to-face classes.
According to school leaders many students have lowered their grades. In addition, thousands of parents argue “concern” because this type of teaching does not work for them.
