To promote agricultural production with a broad sense of food self-sufficiency, is one of the objectives for which Iosvany Acosta Delgado, associated with the Felipe Navarro Credit and Services Cooperative, from the municipality of Ciro Redondo, in the central Cuban province of Ciego de Avila.
This peasant not only cultivates the land for the benefit of his family, but also with the purpose of contributing to the economy of the country and making social contributions, such as the donations of vegetables that he made in the month of January to the Maternal Home and the Casa de los Abuelos, institutions located in the town of Pina.
Contributions like these are possible because Acosta Delgado always has his three hectares occupied, which are planted with cassava, tomato, cucumber, beet, chard, chives, garlic joint, mango, guava, coconut, soursop and other types of viands, vegetables and fruits.
One of the strengths of the La Caridad farm is the raising of small livestock. For many years, its owner has stood out for delivering sheep or mutton to the State, and these days the reproduction of rabbits is revitalized there and the activity of fattening chickens begins to be introduced.
Producing for the sake of producing is not the tactic of the peasant, but rather exploiting the soils without the application of chemical products. It is not by chance that he owns one of the only three areas that in the municipality of Ciro Redondo are certified as an Agroecological Farm.
Asked about his main challenges for this year, he replied: «To strengthen ties with the municipal university center and the University of Ciego de Ávila, I am willing to continue showing students my experiences with organic fertilizers and protein plants for crops and feeding the livestock, solutions that have given me results.
Dividends obtained from Sol a Sol by the peasant, who has the accompaniment for household chores with his daughter Yadixi and his wife Zaida.
