Lüneburg (dpa / lni) – The Lüneburg police want to increasingly tap information on social media to fight crime. As the police department announced on Monday, six experts have been hired who, as “Intel officers”, can access freely accessible sources on the Internet and support colleagues directly in the incident.

Information can be viewed on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat which, in more complex situations, complement the emergency services in their work: with photos, information on age, profession and hobbies. With some profiles, conclusions can be drawn about whereabouts or the social environment. “The new mission-supporting research on the Internet and in social media improves the protection of the population and our emergency services,” said the Lüneburg Police President Thomas Ring. According to the announcement, all major control centers in Lower Saxony will be staffed with such experts in the future.
