The bollards at the entrances to Salzburg city center came off more unscathed in 2020 than in previous years. Last year there was three quarters less damage. The hit and run have also decreased. The reason for this should be the few tourists in the city of Salzburg.

The city’s traffic and road authority reports that the bollards on the left and right of the Salzach not only extended and retracted significantly less often in the previous year, but were also damaged significantly less often: while 108 accidents occurred in 2019, there were only fewer in 2020 28 accidents.
2020: Less tourists and less traffic
“Corona has also left its mark on the bollards. Fewer tourists and the lockdowns meant that we had far fewer bollard accidents. We assume that this has to do with the lower volume of traffic. Because the fewer cars drive into the city center, the fewer accidents happen, ”says the municipal bollard officer in the traffic and road law office, Christian Morgner. Overall, there are 74 percent fewer accidents compared to 2019 – “A very positive development,” said Morgner.
Accidents are often caused by tourists
Most of the bollard accidents in 2020 were the result of tourists and vehicle drivers from other federal states: They each crashed into the iron cylinder eight times. Vehicle drivers from the city of Salzburg caused seven accidents, drivers from the Salzburg districts three and taxi drivers a total of two accidents.
