Sevy had Tommy John surgery in 2020.
GM Brian Cashman reported that the Yankees hope the Dominican is back from his Tommy John right elbow operation to “Late summer”.
Severino had surgery on his right elbow 11 months ago and probably won’t pitch again until June or July at the earliest.
The Yankees, however, would not be in such a rush to accelerate Severino’s return, after adding Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon in the offseason, as well as fellow Dominican Domingo Germán returning from his domestic violence suspension.
After winning 19 games in the 2018 season, Severino made just three starts in the 2019 regular season, affected with lateral discomfort and had two postseason appearances that same season.
Due to two different injuries, Luis Severino has been limited to just three regular-season starts in the past two seasons with the New York Yankees.
In the spring of 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic exploded, a torn ulnar ligament in his right elbow was detected, sending him to the operating room. This type of operation typically takes pitchers out of the game between 12 and 18 months.
Prior to the start of the 2019 season, Severino signed a four-year, $ 40 million contract, plus a $ 15 million fifth-season option for 2023.
