Thiruvananthapuram: The discussions on the candidature of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy are not going well. Acting Congress general secretary for Kerala Tariq Anwar said there was no discussion in the AICC on whether to contest Nemmat. He told Asianet News that the High Command would not interfere in the whereabouts of senior leader Oommen Chandy.
Oommen Chandy’s candidature in Nemom constituency has been a hot topic in Kerala politics in recent days. It was reported that a suggestion had come from the KPCC president and others that Oommen Chandy should contest in Thiruvananthapuram and that it would be a big step forward for the Congress in South Kerala.
The first reaction of KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran was that Oommen Chandy would win wherever he contested. However, Oommen Chandy himself issued a press release denying his candidature. His response was that he would not leave Puthuppally and that it would not change for the rest of his life. He later told Asianet News that he did not know how the debate over Nemtu’s candidacy had escalated.
With this, Mullappally Ramachandran also changed his mind saying that it is not known who started the discussions in such a way that Oommen Chandy will contest for the post and there is no reason for Oommen Chandy to leave Puthuppally.
