Each year, World Wetlands Day (WYZD) is celebrated, to commemorate the signing of the Convention on Wetlands, February 2, 1971 in Iran.
“Water is essential to life”
This sentence “water is essential for life” as a theme for this 2021 edition, is a reminder to the people of the planet of the virtues of water, “one of the essential components of living beings, as much as of ecosystems and human societies” highlighted water from France.
Wetlands, as the name suggests, are waterlogged, temporarily or permanently. They play a major role in the water cycle. They store water in times of flooding and return it in times of drought. The presence of wetlands and their numbers are guarantees of quality water from our tap (…).
The theme of WYDD 2021 is part of the decade of action for water proclaimed by the United Nations in 2018, in order to achieve the 6th sustainable development goal: guarantee access for all to water and sanitation and ensure sustainable management of water resources.

In 2021, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands celebrates its 50th anniversary. Signed by 18 countries in 1971, 171 nations have now committed to preserving HAs, by inscribing more than 2,400 areas of international importance on the list of Ramsar sites, a combined surface area equivalent to that of Argentina.
