It was a break-in that not only caused economic damage, but above all hit needy children hard: Strangers stole 242 freshly delivered tablets with a value of around 100,000 euros from the Willy Brandt School in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen. Now Berliners want to help with a fundraising campaign.
On the online platform “Betterplace” A campaign to raise money for replacement devices started pretty quickly after the fact. By Saturday noon, almost 4,000 euros had already been raised.
The action was brought into being by RBB meteorologist Frank Abel. He “couldn’t stand it,” wrote Abel on Twitter, which is why he started the campaign. Celebrities like presenter Micky Beisenherz support the campaign and solicit donations. On Twitter, pianist Igor Levit wrote: “I think the school should be supported in buying new ones. I’m in, who else?”
Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD) also promised support for the Willy Brand School. “We will not leave the school in question alone in this situation and will quickly take care of the procurement of new equipment,” said Scheeres. She was impressed by the sympathy shown by many Berliners, who showed in social networks and elsewhere that they were with the students.
Scheeres condemned the act in the strongest terms. “With their completely irresponsible act, the thieves deprived many students of educational opportunities and cut off their access to online lessons.”

According to reports, the stolen tablets are devices that the education administration purchased for needy students. According to Tagesspiegel information, that would mean that the tablets run with remote maintenance. They should therefore be discoverable as soon as you turn them on.
The City Councilor for Education, Carsten Spallek (CDU), reported, referring to the damage report, that the theft occurred on Thursday night, whereas the police report indicates Friday night. According to the police, the perpetrators “opened several access doors by force”. Whether the alarm system was switched on, or insurance issues, could not be clarified in the evening.
