Sudbury’s indie cinema looking for a sign

The indie used the time well and programmed insatiable. They were quickly back to a full schedule of 50-60 screenings per month, even though state regulations meant their house numbers were reduced to 25 percent in line with physical distancing.

The cinema also reached out to other local arts organizations to see if they wanted to use the space for their own purposes.

The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra was one of the organizations that took the chance to lead a modified program out of the indie.

“Indie Cinema has been a gracious partner who has helped us maintain our visibility in the community and raise some much-needed donations during this strange time,” said Sally Lesk, SSO chairwoman for fundraising. “The Sudbury Symphony was not only grateful, but also enthusiastic. Having the opportunity to present small ensemble performances in a way that is safe for both visitors and musicians – what a pleasure to see live music again. “

During these 20 weeks, 50 collaborations were held in the indie through public art events. Many were film-related, but they also ranged from musical performances to live theater, spoken word, storytelling, improvisation and artist talks in various disciplines.

The indie is still in its infancy and in 2019 when, like many new companies, they were just opening their doors, the renovations went beyond budget and schedule. The cooperative just had to leave some improvements open. One of those costs was the signage. The cinema was determined to put a sign over the door. But it was a sore point among the members. Because of this, the cinema has launched a crowdsourcing campaign to cobble together the funds and get a sign over the door. The cinema hopes to mobilize donations from supporters and well-wishers to help meet its $ 6,000 goal. The campaign offers discounts such as cinema tickets, concessions and some behind-the-scenes workshops on running a cinema.
