In its update on Friday, January 29, the ARS reported a still worrying circulation of the Covid-19 in Normandy. The arrival of new vaccine supplies as well as the emergence of variants in the region were also mentioned.

“The virus is circulating at a high level. Much higher than before the Christmas period”, warned Thomas Deroche, director general of ARS Normandy, from the outset, in a situation report, this Friday, January 29. The circulation of the virus remains active in the region and is part of the national trend.
The incidence rate in the region remains stable and stands at 181.5 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Earlier this week, Tuesday, January 26, it stood at nearly 189 positive cases: “It is no longer in progress compared to the beginning of the week”, said Thomas Deroche.
Effects on the health system
The circulation “high” of the virus continues to weigh heavily in the daily life of the Normans. But even more in the field of health. “There are noticeable effects on the health system”, granted the director general of ARS Normandie.
In fact, 1,371 people are hospitalized because of Covid-19, this Friday, January 29, in Norman hospitals. Against 1,324, three days earlier. 107 people are admitted to intensive care units, according to the latest ARS score. Against 97, Tuesday January 26.

The situations are different from one territory to another. Thus, Manche, Orne and Seine-Maritime are the most affected departments in Normandy: “It’s quite unusual for La Manche. It was the least affected department in the region during the second wave. It experienced a very sudden increase. We are monitoring the situation very closely.”, added Thomas Deroche before specifying: “For the moment, we cannot establish a link between the links across the Channel and the appearance of the British variant to explain the progression of the virus in the Channel.”
The rise of the coronavirus is therefore very localized in the Region. The phenomenon has, in particular, prompted the hospitals of Rouen, Saint-Lô and Cherbourg to launch their white plan.
Variants present in Normandy?
In Normandy, “sequencing platforms” gradually fall into place. They will make it possible to study the progression of covid variants, whether British, South African or Brazilian: “A positive case is the subject of a new test on the basis of the same sample to identify the variants. This is taking place”, detailed the director of the ARS.
For the moment, it is too early to detail the presence of a particular variant in the population. “From the moment a variant is more contagious, it can be brought to take the place of the father or mother virus”, added Professor Renaud Verdon, head of the infectious and tropical diseases department at Caen University Hospital.

Nationally, nearly 2,000 cases of variants were detected on Thursday, January 28. According to the two men, it is not yet possible to determine the number of cases in Normandy.
No appointment possible to be vaccinated by mid-February
Thomas Deroche also discussed the supply of vaccines in Normandy. In recent days, appointments have been impossible: “The appointment books have been filled until February 14. The next step is the opening of slots for the second half of February.”

From this date, nothing is less certain to be able to obtain an appointment. The new doses will allow the second injections to be given to people who have already been stung once. “The first injections will therefore be less important. You have to integrate the whole system, that’s normal.”
In the fifty or so vaccination centers in Normandy, between 320 and 350 people are vaccinated every day. Since the start of the campaign 93,963 injections have been carried out. Including 91,631 people for a first dose. 2,332 people have therefore already received their second dose of Pfizer vaccine.
Screening campaigns continue
Although the vaccination campaign has come to a halt because of restocking, screening campaigns are continuing. “To better isolate the virus, we have launched screening campaigns directly in the most affected areas”, details Thomas Deroche.
The same operation “Test, alert, protect” took place in Le Havre. Now they are other Norman towns which are concerned, such as Falaise, Evreux, Vire … The list of towns where a screening campaign is taking place is available on the website of theARS Normandie.
