SAN DIEGO- For the third time in less than a week, a winter storm will descend on San Diego County Thursday night, bringing heavy rain overnight and fresh snow on the mountains, but much less wind than last time. .
According to the forecast, Thursday will be mostly dry and cloudy, with some sun breaks. But after 7pm, the story will change.
“The chances of it really raining after 7pm,” explained Sheena Parveen, a meteorologist for our sister network NBC 7.
“From Thursday afternoon to Friday afternoon, a atmospheric river they flow into Southern California and San Diego County, ”added Dagmar Midcap, a meteorologist with NBC 7.
“The southerly winds will sometimes be windy along the coast and mountains, but they will not be as windy as the last storm,” Parveen explained.
However, heavy rains could cause localized flooding Thursday night and overnight, Parveen said.

To that end, the National Weather Service has issued a fast food alert for the San Diego coast, the interior valleys, and the mountains that will be in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday to 4 p.m. through Friday.
The NWS said the heaviest rains are expected to arrive before midnight and last until 6 a.m. Friday. Scattered rains will persist throughout Friday. It is expected to rain up to half an inch per hour, according to the NWS.
Cal Fire tweeted that fire stations in areas like Julian, Mount Laguna, Ramona, Campo and more may have free sand and / or bags available for locals to pick up before the storm. Residents should call selected fire stations in advance to make sure sand, bags, or both are still available.
Winter weather warning, snow expected again in mountains
For the San Diego mountains above 5,000 feet, the NWS has issued a winter weather advisory, effective from 8 am to 6 pm through Friday. About 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected.
Traveling on slippery and snow-covered mountain roads will be challenging, with reduced visibility, which is why the NWS said extreme caution is necessary if driving in those impacted areas.
