The curved penis is found in five to nine percent of white western men, especially in men over 50. “It is a disease that occurs in men with North / West European genes,” explains researcher Daan Mohede. “Not everyone who has the condition knows that. That’s why it should be talked about more.”

In men who have this condition, scar tissue forms on the connective tissue in the penis. “As a result, that part of the penis loses its elasticity, causing the penis to bend upwards during erection. This is often accompanied by a lot of pain and in extreme cases the penis can end up at an angle of 90 degrees.”
Affect sex life
But even the less extreme examples can cause a lot of misery, thinks sexologist Nynke Nijman. “It can greatly influence your sex life,” she tells EditieNL. “If the penis is bent, penetration is difficult because it sometimes does not go in properly. If the penis does go in, it can cause a lot of pain in women.”

Men who are not in a relationship can also experience a lot of inconvenience. “Men can become insecure and find it difficult to start a new intimate relationship.”
According to the sexologist and urologist, more attention should be paid to the problem so that men know it exists and – if they have it – can take it to the doctor.
Exercises
Although the solutions are unfortunately not up for grabs yet. “More research needs to be done,” Mohede continues. “There is a medical stretching device that does stretching exercises on the penis, but this is often uncomfortable and has to be done daily for a long period of time. It can also be operated on, but that is not always successful.”

Nijman also thinks that more attention can help. “In that respect it is a bit like the more difficult moisturizing of women in the menopause. That is more discussed and plays in roughly the same age group. But because this is more known, something can be done more quickly.”
