The latest version of Telegram has a feature on board that makes it easier for WhatsApp users in particular to switch to the alternative messenger. With the build number 7.4 it is possible to import complete chat histories from WhatsApp, for example. We’ll show you how the transfer works.

The time has come on February 8th of this year: The new guidelines on usage and data protection will apply to all WhatsApp users. Although privacy should continue to exist in full and the changes mainly apply to WhatsApp Business, this step has persuaded many users of the popular messenger to at least look for replacement software.

Telegram has long since developed into an alternative to WhatsApp. In this country, too, more and more users are using the originally Russian messenger, which comes from the same makers as the social network VK. One of the biggest advantages of Telegram is that you can hide your phone number so that it is not shown to chat partners if you don’t want to.

New feature makes switching easier

Telegram is now almost on the same level as WhatsApp in terms of functionality. The Messenger from Facebook, however, is much more widespread. One of the reasons for this is that previously, when switching from WhatsApp to Telegram, you could not take the old chats with you.

With the update to version 7.4 of Telegram that has now changed. In addition to further improvements, such as new options for deleting chat messages, adjusting the volume in voice chats, a revised message function and better VoiceOver, there is now the option to import chat histories from WhatsApp into Telegram. Telegram itself does not have an import function – you can now transfer chats to Telegram from WhatsApp.

Instructions: This is how the export of chats works

The feature is actually official in Germany according to the WhatsApp FAQ not available. In our tests, however, the new function worked flawlessly in all cases. Only selected media were not transferred correctly. The texts appear 1: 1 in Telegram’s chat history after the import or export.

To have a chat from WhatsApp Telegram to move, you open first WhatsApp. Click there in a chat of your choice, then at the top on the contact, scroll down and tap on “Export chat“. In the next step you can choose whether you want to add media or whether the export should take place without pictures or videos. The chat history is then packed into a ZIP file that can be copied to Telegram in the” Share “dialog that pops up. There you just have to select the respective conversation partner and confirm the action. The whole thing only works if the target contact has already been added to Telegram.
