2020 will hopefully remain an incomparable year. “An exceptional year”, confirms Dr Brigitta Bergot, president of the medical committee of the Landerneau hospital center. “We had to adapt. Caregivers, technical services, all trades. Do, redo, redo again so that everything happens for the best, ”recalls Pierre-Bernard Gesrel, Managing Director of Ferdinand-Grall.
The coronavirus pandemic and its waves more or less perceptible in advance, in their scope as well as their dangerousness, have increased organizational changes at a rate never before attained. It started with non-urgent activities being canceled. “To meet the needs of patients in critical care beds”.
“This trying period turned out to be incredibly rich in terms of the development of solidarity. “
Spring upheaval
In March, the emergency room is transformed into a covid-19 screening unit, with the day hospital taking on the emergency function. Ten beds are “frozen” in polyvalent medicine. An outpost appears in the car park to sort out patients likely to be contaminated by covid-19 and the others, then direct them to separate care circuits. Understandable precautions which ultimately, and fortunately, will not help much, the number of suspected cases never having reached critical thresholds in other regions.
The second lockdown, in the fall, will not lead to as many changes. “But we were able to reactivate the device quickly,” assures Pierre-Bernard Gesrel. The experience of spring proved the material effectiveness of the thing. Above all, it revealed the level of commitment of the agents of the public hospital.
“Unheard-of wealth of solidarity”
“At the nursing home, where visitation restrictions were taken from March 7, the strong mobilization of the teams made it possible to limit the deleterious effects of confinement. This trying period turned out to be incredibly rich in terms of the development of solidarity ”.
They continue as the rules have relaxed, currently allowing 400 weekly visits to the retirement home. A few cases of covid broke out there in November, but the spread of the disease was prevented.
“All there for the suffering person”
Solidarity was expressed in the opposite direction: “I sent a hundred cards to thank all the donors who offered us chocolates, pizzas, strawberries …”, smiles the general manager.
The pandemic also highlighted the relevance of collaboration between all medical actors: “This cooperation between town and hospital doctors, private and public nurses, psychologists, all health partners has made it possible to keep up during the crisis . That it continues beyond ”, hopes Pierre-Bernard Gesrel. “It’s stronger in Brittany than elsewhere. We are all here to provide the best service to the person in pain, ”says Dr Bergot.
