Sotheby’s is auctioning a painting by Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli, estimated at more than $ 80 million, on Thursday, an event in an art market lacking in shine.
No table at 100 million for 20 months: the period of serial records from 2015 to 2018 seems far away and the auctions are no longer in the headlines.
The “Portrait of the young man holding a medallion”, who represents a young ephebe with long hair, will he reach this symbolic threshold?
“When you look at a painting like this, which is so exceptional, you have to compare it to other masterpieces, paintings by Picasso, Bacon or Basquiat”, which have broken records in recent years, argues Christopher Apostle, head of the old masters department at Sotheby’s in New York.
Among the old masters, only Leonardo da Vinci, with the 450 million dollars of his “Salvator Mundi”, has ever crossed the 100 million at auction.
