Geeta Gopinath says farmers’ income will increase if agricultural laws are implemented

IMF chief economist Geeta Gopinath has expressed support for the central government amid mounting protests by farmers against agricultural laws. She said the agricultural sector was one of the areas where India needed comprehensive reforms. Geeta Gopinath is a former financial adviser to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The new rules expand the market for farmers to sell their produce. In addition to the mandi markets, farmers have access to a number of markets. Geeta told PTI that this will also increase the income of farmers.

Any reform will have to pay the price of change. Therefore, extreme care should be taken in the case of farmers who can easily fall into losses. They need to make sure they are coming into the social security network. Geeta Gopinath said that discussions are underway in this regard.
