TEXAS – One of the most important issues for the immigrant community in Texas will be discussed in the new Legislative Session that begins this week in the state capital.

A bill seeks the possibility of granting conditional driving licenses to people who are undocumented in Texas.

Bill HB-1058 will be introduced by Democratic Representative Ramón Romero, but it is anticipated that he will have a prominent position from Republican representatives.

In recent statements, Romero said that a driver’s license could help reduce risk on the roads. “Today thousands of Texans drive without completing a driver’s course, and that is not because they chose not to,” said the representative, of Mexican parents, during a press conference where the Mexican American Legislative Caucus revealed and discussed proposals that will be submitted during the legislative session.

Currently in Texas, an undocumented person cannot obtain a driver’s license.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) requires applicants for a driver’s license to have U.S. citizenship or evidence of legal presence in the United States, Texas residency, proof of identity, a social security number, and a vehicle registration. as well as proof of insurance.

Romero, a representative from the Fort Worth area, also noted that undocumented people in Texas without a driver’s license can be detained and deported under SB4.

SB-4 allows law enforcement to question the immigration status of anyone they detain or arrest. This includes drivers and passengers who have been stopped for traffic stops, such as speeding or having a broken taillight.
