Nine neighborhoods affected
New York faces a new partial lockdown
–
Only a few days ago the schools in New York opened again, restaurants are allowed to serve guests again inside. But in nine postcode areas, the new freedom should come to an end again, according to Mayor de Blasio. He applies for a new lockdown for certain areas.
Due to the rapidly increasing number of new corona infections, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced the reintroduction of restrictions in nine districts. “Unfortunately, today is not a day to celebrate,” said de Blasio. He will petition New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to close all non-essential shops and schools in the affected areas.
In spring, New York was one of the cities hardest hit by the corona pandemic in the world. Almost 24,000 people died in the east coast metropolis as a result of their corona infection. Strict exit restrictions were in place for weeks.
There are large Jewish Orthodox communities in several of the nine neighborhoods in which the number of infections is now rising sharply again, and which are all in Brooklyn or Queens. The recent explosion in corona cases coincided with the high Jewish holidays around Yom Kippur.
In the nine affected districts, more than three percent of all corona tests were positive in the past seven days. There are also worrying developments in eleven other postcode areas, said de Blasio.
Just a few days ago, the children and young people in New York returned to schools after months of distance learning. Restaurants were also allowed to reopen their interiors to guests under strict conditions.
