The City Council wants a study to be conducted among children who are known to have ingested too much lead through drinking water. In the autumn of 2019 it became clear that thousands of homes in the city still have lead pipes. The PvdA has therefore submitted an initiative proposal to the College together with the SP, VVD, Groenlinks and D66.

‘We are concerned, we speak to many residents who are concerned,’ says PvdA councilor Tom Leenders. ‘We ask the College to investigate this in ten children. If it turns out that there is lead poisoning, a treatment plan must be drawn up for those children. ‘
Unrest
In the autumn of 2019, great unrest arose when it became known that many old houses still had lead pipes. Residents were afraid to drink water at home and protested to their landlords. The council members indicate that too high a lead intake in children can lead to developmental disorders. 95 percent of the lead collects in the bones, which can lead to drowsiness and confusion, among other things. According to the Health Council, too much lead can also lead to a lower IQ in children.

Floyd Fransman has long been concerned about his 12-year-old son Laslo. For years they drank water with a lead percentage that turned out to be more than 9 times higher than the permitted standard. ‘I think it is good that the research is now being carried out, but I think it is very late,’ says Fransman. ‘They should have done that right from the start. It has turned out that there are 60,000 children in the Netherlands with an excess of lead in their bodies and they are in fact left to their own devices. ‘

Does my son have ADD or lead poisoning? We want to know what causes his concentration problems
–
His son Laslo has had major concentration problems while learning for years. He probably has ADD, but the problems could also come from lead poisoning, Floyd says. ‘That is why clarity is very important to us. Is it ADD or lead poisoning that is troubling him. ‘ Especially since Laslo is going to high school next year, he wants to know for sure what the cause is. He has already visited his doctor and the GGD, who referred him to hospital. but because of corona he has not got there yet. ‘I want to be sure that they don’t just prescribe a drug for ADD when he doesn’t have one,’ says Fransman.
The city council also thinks it should be introduced soon. Councilor Tom Leenders: ‘Firstly, we have to take away the concerns and secondly, we need to know exactly how things work. Do those children have lead poisoning or not? ‘
This week, the initiative proposal of the parties will be discussed in the healthcare committee meeting.
