Many postgraduate and higher education institutions are in a time of transition, in which they are forced to move degrees created and built for a face-to-face teaching environment to a remote teaching environment. In this sense, although there are more and more educational centers and degrees that teach their programs exclusively online, these were only a 18-20% of the total in Spain and in the whole of Europe until before the start of the pandemic.
Gonzalo Valdés, Chief Strategy Officer en Making Science, explain what: “Forecasts regarding economic evolution warn that the global impact of the current crisis on the education sector will be large and lasting. The sector in Spain currently has basic digitization needs of different organizations such as schools, institutes and universities, but it is not enough. Higher education centers must prepare to face operational and financial difficulties in the coming years, in large part due to the scarce digitization of the system ”. According to the expert, an adequate and coordinated response by national and European administrations can help mitigate long-term damage, but schools will have to react quickly and decisively.
Likewise, the report ensures that, the scarce digitization of the education system is compounded by the lack of support for teachers, They need tools that adapt to the new remote environment situation and that, in addition, allow interaction between students and establish a network of beneficial relationships for all. “Failure to create a suitable environment in which digital needs are resolved, students could see their education compromised, especially from a point of view of lack of equal opportunities. Not all students have the digital tools necessary to follow the online training”, Assures Valdés.
Throughout 2020, failures in the cybersecurity systems of educational organizations have also been discovered, which have yet to strengthen their systems to prevent this type of attack and make the necessary investments to guarantee the security and privacy of the data. One measure that these institutions must implement to guarantee the continuity and availability of the online education platform is the protection of the tools used for teaching, such as virtual private networks (VPN) and other work tools, promoting cloud environments that facilitate agility, also guaranteeing good security and privacy management for storing teaching material.
The education sector is one of the most affected by the pandemic. It’s time to bet on digitization and invest in technology for the development of new educational initiatives adapted to the new way of teaching and that improve the training process permanently.
