After Apple, Sony could launch a “mini” smartphone in 2021

Despite a disappointing start, the iPhone 12 mini could succeed in reviving the small smartphone market. According to the leaker OnLeaks, Sony is currently working on a new iteration of its Xperia Compact range which was discontinued in 2017. With a 5.5-inch screen, Sony’s new smartphone would however be a little larger than Apple’s iPhone 12 mini.

Will there be a return of small smartphones?

According to OnLeaks, the future Xperia Compact would be 140mm high, 68.9mm wide and 8.9mm thick. Its dimensions would be larger than those of its rival in iOS (131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4mm) but still allow people who like small devices to enjoy a compact experience.

However, one can ask the question of the impact of such a product on the market. With less than 1% of market share, Sony weighs… nothing. The iPhone 12 mini’s lack of success, along with Samsung’s failure two years ago with the Galaxy S10e, suggests that the mini smartphone market is actually tiny. Big screens continue to sell the most! Not sure to see this format really win in 2021.
