Posthumous tribute for a brutal murder

For yet another year, the Salamanca left, both from the Communist Party of Spain and the Workers’ Commissions union, recalled the labor lawyer Serafín Holgado de Antonio, coinciding with the 44th anniversary of his murder on January 24, 1977 in the office that he and four of his other colleagues They also had labor lawyers on Atocha street in Madrid. On this occasion and due to the pandemic generated by covid-19, and in order not to contribute to the spread of the virus, the Salamanca PCE chose to make two floral offerings in which only Vicencio Gómez participated, on behalf of the PCE Méndez, in his capacity as provincial secretary of the party in Salamanca; the councilor for Izquierda Unida in Salamanca City Council, Virginia Carrera Garrosa, and Raúl Vázquez, representing the Communist Youth. Thus, at 10:30 am, the representation of the PCE and the Communist Youth placed a bouquet of flowers on the grave of Serafín Holgado de Antonio in the cemetery of Salamanca. Later, at 11:00 a.m., they deposited another bouquet of flowers on the existing monolith on Serafín Holgado Street, in the White Quarter of the capital. Both bouquets were made with the republican colors, red, yellow and purple flowers.

For the Salamanca Communist Party, continuing to remember Serafín Holgado de Antonio, 44 years after his assassination, represents “much more” than remembering a militant from the Salamanca communist group who is no longer with them.

«It involves remembering and vindicating a man from Salamanca, whose young life was taken away by the intransigence of the extreme right-wing groups for the mere fact of defending the workers and demanding justice and freedom for a country that was already emerging from forty years of dictatorship. as well as him, to remember the four communist militants who were murdered that night in January 1977 and all those who suffered violence during a political transition, which unfortunately was not peaceful, “said the PCE in its release.

Memory

For its part, CCOO also paid tribute to Serafín Holgado yesterday. The union remarked that “one more year, in these exceptional circumstances, we want to once again pay tribute and keep in our memory our colleagues, the lawyers of Atocha and our beloved Serafín Holgado, after 44 years of his murder.”

Workers’ Commissions indicated that “without unnecessary personal roles, today from CC OO de Salamanca, we understand that it is only worth highlighting the importance of keeping in our memory what that terrible attack meant, not only against the labor lawyers of office number 55 of the calle Atocha in Madrid, that January 24, 1977, but also the dark intentions that that unfortunate event hid against the transition in Spain.

It is also about “re-emphasizing the need to keep alive the historical memory of our country, our democracy and an important part of the origins of our union organization,” emphasized Workers Commissions.
