Lahti (dpa) – Combined veteran Bernhard Gruber was taken to hospital at the World Cup competitions in Lahti, Finland, because of renewed heart problems.
The 38-year-old Austrian complained of chest pain on Saturday after the team sprint, as reported by the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) and the Fis World Ski Federation on Sunday morning. “After the race today, Bernhard Gruber’s partial occlusion of a coronary artery caused symptoms again,” said team doctor Ines Berger-Uckermann. Two stents were used during a cardiac catheter examination.
“Bernhard is so far in good shape and has to stay in the hospital for a few more days according to his recovery,” added Austria’s team doctor. This is not the first time Gruber has had heart problems. In March 2020, a partial occlusion of the coronary artery was found. It was only eight months later that the doctors gave him permission to resume training. In the team sprint on Saturday afternoon, he finished sixth together with compatriot Mario Seidl.
