Luca Seer from Mondsee wants to compete with the world’s elite in kitesurfing

MOON LAKE. Since Luca Seer started kiting six years ago, it has been his greatest dream to compete with the world’s elite in kitesurfing.

In November 2020, the 19-year-old had the first chance to show his talent at a World Tour event. As the only Austrian starter, he was able to fight his way through to 21st place against the world’s elite. As a result, he qualified for the entire 2021 tour. “I am more than motivated to take this opportunity,” says Seer.

Little time to make money

For kite surfers in Austria there are no clubs or associations that would provide support. Therefore, he lacks the budget to get to the places where these competitions are held. Because of the many flights and stays in other countries, the total costs for one season come to around 20,000 euros. The athlete can finance a small part of this through jobs in the winter season. As in most other sports, kitesurfing is – if you do it at a high level – a full-time job and doesn’t leave much room or time to make money.

Learned kiting from father

By the way, Luca learned to kite from his father on vacation. Even at school he was a good gymnast and had some successes for the Mondsee gymnastics club and the SHS Mondsee.

Luca Seer began to take part in the few possible competitions in Austria. When it became clear that he had potential, his desire to take part in international competitions grew stronger. After passing his Matura in summer 2020, he set off with his 20-year-old Audi A4 via Italy by ferry to Greece to train there and improve his skills. Most of the time we spent the night in the car. In these eleven weeks in Greece he improved his tricks with hard training and learned many new ones.

21st place in Brazil

He has been studying online marketing since September. At the end of October he traveled to Brazil. The GKA (Kite World Tour) had announced a date for a competition (the only one in 2020) where he made his debut on the tour. As the only Austrian starter, he was able to fight his way through to 21st place and thus qualify for the entire tour in 2021.

With the company Bauzone he has a sponsor who supports him financially. In addition, Luca has started a crowdfunding project where he would like to collect the necessary money for participation in the international competitions in 2021.
